CHICKASHA– Shawnee’s fumbling start gave Chickasha’s Fightin’ Chicks some Fightin’ hope Friday night.
All to no avail.
After coughing up the ball on its first two possessions, Shawnee rolled to a 35-0 halftime advantage en route to a 55-0 spanking in a Class 5A non-district season opener.
Shawnee’s spread offense, under the varsity quarterback debut of sophomore Brayle Brown, simply had too much talent for the outmanned Chick defenders.
Same story for Shawnee’s defense, which suffocated sophomore quarterback Chase Rogers and his teammates.
Brett Davis, the most talented player on the field, accumulated 91 yards (85 on receptions) and two touchdowns.
Fellow senior Phillip Powell registered 137 yards rushing on eight carries. Brown completed 7 of 13 passes for 153 yards, including scoring heaves of 50, 13 and 59 yards.
Brown also rushed for 44 yards on five carries.
By halftime, Shawnee had outoffensed the hosts 348-42. The Wolves scored on both sides of the ball. Linebacker Austin Winsett launched the scoring less than four minutes into the game when he picked up an errant center snap and ran the final yard to the end zone.
The Wolves added three second-quarter touchdowns — a 13-yard reception by Brett Davis, a 59-yard stop-and-go completion to Jordan Robbins and a 7-yard Powell run. Beau Davis also converted a 2-point conversion run.
Shawnee upped its advantage to 48-0 after three quarters on a 34-yard scoring run by Justin Parsons and a 2-yard Jordan Acock run.
Acock added a 9-yard scoring TD around the left flank to end the scoring with 4:04 left.
Shawnee finished with 497 total yards to 49 for Chickasha.
One of the few negative notes came when starting defensive end Jordan McClain was ejected at the outset of the third quarter.
Chickasha didn’t record a second-half first down until less than two minutes remained in the fourth quarter — despite operating primarily against SHS reserves.
“I thought we played pretty well,” Shawnee head coach Billy Brown said. “Everyone got to play. We started slow but we kept our composure. That was impressive on our part.”
Twelve SHS players were credited with rushes and the Wolves employed three quarterbacks.
Shawnee linebackers Austin Winsett and Keldin Choate were unofficially credited with six tackles apiece. Winsett also recovered a fumble. Also recovering a fumble was Ethan Acock.
The Wolves didn’t give up a touchdown in preseason scrimmages against Tecumseh and McAlester.
Shawnee will continue non-district action next week by entertaining Deer Creek at Jim Thope Stadium. The kickoff is set for 7:30.
