Third-ranked, Class 3A Chandler used two three-run innings to pin a 6-3 defeat on Tecumseh Friday.
The Lions of head coach Geoff Metheny posted three runs in the bottom of the third to post a 3-0 lead. With one out, Casey Barrier walked and went to third on a single by Johnathon Frazier. Frazier advanced to second on the play on a high throw.
Jack Gray followed with a two-run double into the left center gap. Jon Gray’s grounder to the third baseman resulted in a throwing error as Jack Gray scored.
The Lions held that 3-0 lead until the sixth. Devin Mays was plunked by a pitch and moved to second on a passed ball. With one out, Casey Barrier stroked an RBI single up te middle. Barrier moved to third on Frazier’s single, then scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0. Gray then closed the Chandler scoring on an RBI line-drive single to right.
Frazier, the starting hurler, didn’t allow a run in a six-inning stint. He prmitted five hits, struck out four and didn’t issue a walk.
In the seventh inning, Jackson Ryan of Tecumseh drew a leadoff walk off Chance Rush. A hit batsman (Tyler Factor) and Preston Gray’s single to left field loaded the bases. An infield single up the middle by Alex Iglesias netted one run and the other two Savage runs came as the result of RBI groundouts by Kevin Hill and Jesse Belvin.
Frazier was the ringleader of Chandler’s 10-hit attack with a 3-of-4 outing that featured three singles. Gray had a double and single while Barrier and Brandon Cummings chipped in with two singles apiece.
For Tecumseh, Gray finished 2-of-4 with two singles.
Chandler, 15-3, will play an 11 a.m. single game today at Wellston. Monday, the Lions will oppose Lincoln County rival Stroud in a 4:30 p.m. matchup at Stroud.
Tecumseh, 12-16, will play two games today in Seminole. Coach Quintin Nichols’s Savages will oppose Marlow at 2 p.m. and Seminole at 4. Seminole will meet Marlow at noon.
“Our kids battled back from a 6-0 deficit to make a game of it,” Nichols said. “Mistakes are still really hurting us.”
Monday, Tecumseh will travel to McGuinness. McGuinness will return the favor Tuesday.
