SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Shawnee products Anthony Davis and James Brown combined for a 2-3 singles record Monday as the Paul Duffield Junior Tennis Tournament opened a three-day run.
Davis and Brown were Shawnee’s only entrants in the boys 14-year-old singles competition.
Davis launched play with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 decision over Brandon Todd of Edmond but finished his 14 singles day with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Ada’s John Stout.
Brown opened with a 6-0, 6-0 setback to Blake Saylor of Edmond. He rebounded for a 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 consolation decision over Ada’s Ryan Burkhart but concluded with a 6-0, 6-0 second-round consolation loss to Edmond’s Derek Hackett.
Brown and Davis also played one doubles match, losing a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Braxton Bates of Edmond and Gabe Kanelopoulos of Yukon. Bates captured the 14 singles championship.
There were no Shawnee participants in Monday’s girls 14 singles or boys 18 singles.
Tournament officials had hoped to draw 130 to 150 participants — its normal showing over the past few years — but just 72 were on hand.
“Our tennis qualifying sections were reconfigured and that hurt us as far as numbers go,” tournament director Sue Dick said. “Shawnee is now part of the Oklahoma City sectional and we need to be out of that. Kids can qualify in Oklahoma City instead of coming to Shawnee to qualify.
“That has hurt us as well as the gas prices.”
More play is scheduled today at the Shawnee High School and Oklahoma Baptist University courts. Singles and doubles action is slated for the girls 16 and 18 divisions, as well as boys 16.
Three Shawnee netters — Chris Davis, Bryce Jones and Kenton McGalliard — are among the 16 singles field.
Taylor Haddad is Shawnee’s sole representative in girls 16 singles. Taylor and her sister, Nikki Haddad, will also be involved in doubles play. Also in the 16 doubles division is the Shawnee team of Taylor Thompson and Cydney Ramirez.
Shawnee’s Lauren Alt is entered in 18 singles.
The tournament will conclude Wednesday. Brian Dick and Jack Scrutchins of Shawnee are in the boys 12 field while Kaitlan Wolfe, also from Shawnee, will play in girls 12.
