Shawnee will likely complete that perfect regular season one day earlier than originally expected.
The Wolves, seeking their first unblemished regular season since 1973, were scheduled to conclude the regular season Friday night against Capitol Hill at C.B. Speegle Stadium in Oklahoma City.
At least that was what Shawnee’s athletic officials believed to be the case.
A report surfaced Sunday that the game was slated to be played Thursday, but Shawnee officials couldn’t get in touch with anyone from Capitol Hill until Monday. When the two schools finally made contact, Capitol Hill said they had been under the impression that the game was set for Thursday night at 7:30.
Capitol Hill High School and Southeast High School have joint use of C.B. Speegle Stadium. A Capitol Hill spokesman told Shawnee athletic director Steve Fluke that Southeast was slated to entertain Woodward Friday night.
Had the Southeast-Woodward game been played Thursday, the visitors would have faced a lengthy bus trip back to the northwest part of the state on a school night.
Fluke, who said the Shawnee contract had the game scheduled for Friday, believed there was a positive side to the switch. Shawnee’s coaching staff will now be able to scout possible first-round playoff foes, he said.
Shawnee, with its district title already assured, will entertain the fourth-place, regular-season finisher from District 5A-1.
Entering Friday’s games, Altus and Deer Creek are currently tied for the fourth-place, 5A-1 slot at 3-3. Lawton MacArthur is third at 4-2. El Reno and Duncan share the lead at 6-0 going into their Friday showdown at El Reno.
Altus will travel to Chickasha (2-4) Friday night while Deer Creek will be at Lawton MacArthur.
Shawnee defeated Deer Creek 46-19 in a Sept. 11 contest at Deer Creek.
