SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Pottawatomie County voters Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a proposed millage increase to support libraries within the county.
Unofficial results from the Pottawatomie County Election Board show that the two-mill increase, which brings the total ad valorem tax levy to six mills per dollar, received 1,211 “yes” votes and 423 “no” votes.
The six-mill ad valorem tax levy is the maximum allowed under state law, said Tom Terry, chairman of the committee in support of the millage increase.
The funds generated by the increase will be used to support libraries within Pottawatomie County operated by Pioneer Library System.
These libraries are located in Shawnee, Tecumseh and McLoud.
“This vote is to provide money to operate the libraries,” Terry said in an earlier interview with the News-Star.
The funds will be used for personnel and materials, Terry said.
The last increase for library support came in 1992, Terry said, and since then library use has increased by 60 percent.
