A house east of Tecumseh was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning, and officials have still not determined the cause of the blaze.
Aaron Williams, Tecumseh Fire Department assistant chief, said the department received the call just before 1 a.m. Saturday. The reporting individual was at the scene, Williams said, and he told firefighters that the house was unoccupied.
The house is located at 23962 Skagg City Road.
“It was totally involved when we got there. All we did was keep it from spreading,” Williams said.
Williams said firefighters had to cut a lock on the gate to gain access to the property, and he said the road was washed out. It appeared the property had not been occupied for some time, he said.
Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours battling the blaze, Williams said, and despite one firefighter falling through the front porch, nobody was injured.
“Luckily (the fire) was already knocked down, so he didn’t sustain any type of injury at all,” Williams said.
Williams said he was able to make contact with the house’s owner, Wayne resident Shelly Scott.
“She did confirm that no one lived in the house,” he said. “There was just some stuff being stored there.”
No electricity was supplied to the house, Williams said, and the Tecumseh Fire Department and the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the cause of the fire.
