To the Editor:
When are we finally going to wake up in this country? When will we finally ask the right questions? Does it really matter if humans cause global warming or even if it exists? Why not ask the question, “Do you want to leave our children and grandchildren a cleaner, more efficient world with pure air and water, or do we make a quick buck and leave them a toxic dump dependent on dirty energy?”
Do we believe the factory worker’s child has the same right to quality health care as the head of a large cooperation? How about education? Do we believe that social systems like Social Security, Medicare, police and fire departments make us a bunch of communists?
Do we believe in freedom of religion or do we force our own religion on others? Do we, as some have implied, not worry about the condition of the world because if “God wants it to end, it will, if not, it won’t.” Pardon me, I have yet to see God clean up our toxic waste; however, I have seen humans suffer at the irresponsibility of mankind. I believe in sowing and reaping, and it looks like our children will reap our irresponsible seeds.
Lastly, how can we be so patriotic and yet appear to hate the government? If we believe in America and we believe we have the best system of government in the world, why do we want less of it? Perhaps it is those who run this country we despise (co-ops), but if this is so, there is a way to change it. Vote. If we say God bless America, why do we curse its central government system? A democracy is designed to be “By the people, for the people” so why are we just a bunch of individuals and not an American society based on principles we can be proud of? Very sad, indeed.
