SHAWNEE, Okla. —

To the Editor:
I have read all the discussion about the sidewalks going to nowhere and who should have sidewalks and who should not have sidewalks. I have read all the political advertisements and how everyone wants Shawnee to get new businesses. I keep driving down Main Street of Shawnee, and when I get to the 400 block and see all the old buildings locked up with signs in the windows: Antiques, Collectibles and Trash.
I believe it is time for our city officials to make a trip down that way. It looks to me like it is one big fire waiting to happen. If they would do something about these buildings and make the owners clean them up and do something to make them a little more appealing, it would not only help to get more businesses, but then we could ask the city to go in and put new sidewalks in.
I am disabled and it makes me sick when I try to navigate down the sidewalks on Main. I was raised in Shawnee and I use to be so proud of our Main Street. I would like to hear some input from our future mayor and commissioners about our Main Street. Are you going to only fix up the Bell Street area? Is the rest of downtown Shawnee worth saving? I belive it is. Some of those old buildings are worth saving. I know they have been standing for 70 years. If they are worth enough to store trash in, they are worth saving, fixing and putting small businesses in.
Let’s make Shawnee look like Shawnee again.
