SHAWNEE, Okla. —

ODOT decided they wanted to use Twitter to notify motorists about traffic conditions so they hired Saxum Public Relations to set up their Twitter account and paid them $7,500 for setting up a service that my 12-year-old grandson can do on his own without spending a penny. Saxum also trained and counseled ODOT for 10 days to learn how to post updates on traffic, road closings and other information, which I feel sure my 12-year-old grandson could have figured out on his own as well.
Meanwhile, ODOT has implemented a hiring freeze and other measures to deal with a five percent budget cut. It’s rumored they are considering spending another $7,500 for further training.
Our senior nutrition sites are also struggling to maintain services. Perhaps they need to spend some of their available funding to set up Twitter accounts to let our seniors know which days they will be able to provide meals.
If you Twitter, you might want to start following ODOT and let them know, you are smart enough to set up your own Twitter account. I found them and also told them I’d rather they spent their money on asphalt than Twittering. Their Twitter account is under the name OKDOT.
