Nursing students shed light on health issues from roof

Posted Nov 09, 2009 @ 09:47 AM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

In light of your recent articles regarding the current condition of Shawnee High School, I would like to emphasize the significance of the problem and its implications for the health of students.
I am a member of the senior class of Oklahoma Baptist University’s School of Nursing, and there is a Community Health course included in our curriculum. Within this course, a project focusing on health needs in a community has been assigned among eight groups.

Obama himself said country no longer a christian nation

Posted Nov 06, 2009 @ 09:05 AM
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. —

My letter dated 11-04-09 drew heavy fire on the statement that we weren’t a christian nation. I have to tell you that I got that from Obama himself. He said in one of his many speeches that we were no longer a christain nation.

Bond addresses important issues, should be approved

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

There’s a whole lot to like about the City of Shawnee! The vitality of any city is directly tied to the willingness of its citizens to recognize and act in behalf of present and future needs. The fruits of this vitality can be seen all around us in our Convention Center, new “state of the art” mid school, coming Kickapoo road project, and the new business starts and expansions seen around town.

God, not Santa, is reason for Christmas

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

I take exception to your article in Saturday’s paper titled “Santa gets help providing for children  overseas.” I am sure the title was added by a staffer with the newspaper. You see Operation Chrismas Child is not about helping Santa. It is about reminding a child in need that God loves them and they have not been forgotten. These gifts are packaged by people who care and want to help the needy. They are not doing this because they are Santa’s little helpers.

Conservative proud of Beck comparison

Posted Nov 05, 2009 @ 10:16 AM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

I would like to graciously thank Joe Hall for associating me with Glen Beck. I can only wish I had the ever increasing popularity and audience of such a dynamic person, one who has opened up such large ratings on his recent exposes’ of all the corruption of the left wing, socialist and communist idealogue of the friends and associates of the Obama administration and the “Chicago Way” of doing business.

ODOT hires public relations firm to set up Twitter account

Posted Nov 04, 2009 @ 10:07 AM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

ODOT decided they wanted to use Twitter to notify motorists about traffic conditions so they hired Saxum Public Relations to set up their Twitter account and paid them $7,500 for setting up a service that my 12-year-old grandson can do on his own without spending a penny.

Family Promise receives donations despite economy

Posted Nov 04, 2009 @ 10:02 AM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Every day we hear or read about another hit to the economy. The rising cost of necessary food items makes us cringe. Fuel cost continually grows more expensive as the holidays approach. Every day Family Promise of Shawnee receives an increasing number of phone calls from people in dire need of basic items such as food and shelter.Yet, during the past year, when times have been tough on all of us, the giving to Family Promise has not decreased.

One vote at a time

Posted Nov 03, 2009 @ 09:57 AM
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. —

I have a good friend in Shawnee that has questioned my negative attitude towards our country’s future. I can answer that question by first saying I can remember when our elected president said that we did live in a Christian Nation. I can remember when our president quoted the Bible in his speeches and not the Koran.

Loud music needs enforcement

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

As a new resident to the city of Shawnee, I am finding that even though there is a police officer residence around the corner from me, there are a few people who still drive with their car stereos blasting (bass maxed out) all hours of the day and night.

Baxters, News-Star appreciated

Posted Nov 03, 2009 @ 09:50 AM
OKLAHOMA CITY —

These good Samaritans, the Baxter family, as well as the Shawnee NewsStar employees, took the time and effort to assist these helpless animals and their owner out of a bad situation. Now the “official animal rights groups” are up in arms and have contacted the Pottawatomie County sheriff and district attorney because they were apparently left out of the loop.

Son tells story of father’s ‘enslavement’ to cigarettes

Posted Nov 02, 2009 @ 05:10 PM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Following, I relate events which changed where I lived, and how I am able to live! In a real way, cigarettes brought Allie and I to Oklahoma.
My passion in fighting the life and vitality robbing effects of smoking (cancer, heart and lung disease) led me to working with “PATCH,” our local anti-smoking coalition. All my interests tennis, cycling and singing, demand strong healthy lungs. At 72, all are still on the table. I stopped in time, will you?

Melting pot no longer coming together, just the opposite

Posted Nov 02, 2009 @ 05:06 PM
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. —

I would imagine that I’m like a lot of other people who wonder if there really is a living God as depicted in the Bible. If there is I would think that he is disgusted with his creations by now.
His world is changing fast and not for the better for my part.  We have become a very large melting pot due to our poor enforcement of the immigration laws.

Best political conversations are based on realities, not negatives

One way we at times fail to develop a constructive political conversation is to think only negative thoughts about people we disagree with. The following description from a letter to the editor is an example of a negative description.

Health care bill, if passed, goes against the Constitution

TECUMSEH, Okla. —

Another step closer to socialized, government controlled, Obamacare, came to pass on Oct. 13, as the Senate panel passed the sweeping health bill.
On to the debate and more wasted time by our elected representatives. This has risen to the height of unconscionable actions displayed by elected officials sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States

Fall Fest Outreach called success

Posted Oct 28, 2009 @ 11:42 AM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Fall Fest Community Outreach 2009 will go down as a great success for Shawnee and the surrounding area. Shawnee Rescue Mission/Labor of Love Charities and 100-plus volunteers from many area churches and businesses came together for a wonderful day in Woodland Veteran’s Park last week.

Let leaseholders lease directly with state

Posted Oct 28, 2009 @ 11:38 AM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

The lease between the City of Shawnee and the Commissioners of the Land Office (CLO) will expire Dec. 31. The city has the option to renew for another three years, or allow the current school land leaseholders to lease directly from the CLO. To date, the majority of the City Commissioners have opted to remain involved in the lease process.

Writers make themselves look bad without lying

In response to Joe Hall, here are quotes from Cass Sunstein and Mark Lloyd. Cass Sunstein in his own words, “The Second Amendment seems to specify its own purpose, which is to protect the ‘well regulated’ Militia.” If that’s the purpose of the Second Amendment (as Burger believed), then we might speculate it safeguards not individual rights but federalism.

Cap and Trade will cause the loss of another 2 million jobs

Posted Oct 28, 2009 @ 09:28 AM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Obama is no dummy. I believe he is clever and devious. The third week of October has seen 531,000 more sign up on unemployment. Obama is bound to know global warming caused by CO2 emission is a hoax. He knows over the last 11 years earth has been cooling. Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming was the headlines Feb. 26, 2008.

New law will provide better funding stability for veterans

Posted Oct 27, 2009 @ 09:33 AM
SHAWNEE, Okla. —

During both Republican and Democratic administrations, I have been disappointed at the level of support the VA has received. That is why I was very encouraged to read that President Obama has signed into law a measure designed to provide better funding stability for veteran’s programs.
The new law will guarantee timely and predictable funding by laying out the VA budget early.

Many contributed to making spaghetti dinner successful

Do you believe in miracles? Well, if not, then you should have been around the Salvation Army building this past week to see the army of women going and coming as they made preparations for the big Salvation Army Spaghetti Day fundraiser cooking meat, bagging spices, roaster after roaster cooking sauce for two days, cutting squares of material to cover sauce containers, slicing bread and desserts, wrapping plastic ware and selling tickets.
