October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Unity Health Center will host several events to help educate the community about breast cancer, including methods of self examination and risk factor awareness.
The first of these events, “Mammograms and Self Exams,” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1.
“Breast Cancer and Treatment Options,” will be the subject of the second community education forum and is scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8.
The third forum, “Lymphedema: What is it? What can I do about it?” is scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, and “Cancer and Nutrition” is scheduled for 6 p.m., Oct. 22.
Each of the education forums will be held at Cafe Unity, inside Unity Health Center, north campus.
“In the United States, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women,” Carla Tollett, marketing director for Unity, said. “More than 80 percent of diagnosed breast cancers occur in women with no known risk factors. With early detection and treatment a woman’s chance of survival increases significantly.”
Also scheduled for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the 14th annual Think Pink luncheon.
The luncheon, scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13 at the Heart of Oklahoma Conference Center, will feature Dr. Stephanie Toth, family medicine, as guest speaker. JoAnna Locke and daughters will share a personal, family survival story regarding breast cancer at the luncheon, as well.
“Locke and daughters will enlighten guests on the challenges facing breast cancer patients and families and provide uplifting and inspirational hope concerning recovery,” Tollett said. “Unity Health Center will be tickled ‘pink’ to see you at the 2009 Think Pink Luncheon.”
Reservations must be made by Monday, Oct. 5 for attendance to the luncheon.
