The Pottawatomie County Health Department in collaboration with the Okfuskee, Seminole and Hughes County Health Departments, Local Emergency Planning Committees and the Shawnee Public Schools will sponsore a special H1N1 vaccine clinic on Saturday at the Shawnee High School Performing Arts and Athletic Center. The clinic is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We are encouraging those in the outlined high risk/priority groups to take advantage of the H1N1 vaccine that will be provided. We will provide the vaccine to those groups in hopes of lessening the impact of the H1N1 virus,” said Tina Johnson, administrative director for Pottawatomie, Seminole, Hughes and Okfuskee County Health Departments. Priority groups include the following:
• All children ages 6 months to 18 years of age
• Pregnant women
• Frontline healthcare workers with direct patient contact to acutely ill persons.
• Custodial parents of infants less than 6 months of age
• Persons 19 to 64 years of age with chronic medical conditions such as chronic pulmonary disease, renal dysfunction, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and immunosuppressive illnesses.
The vaccine will be available in the injectable and nasal spray form. The nasal spray known as Flu Mist is approved for healthy persons 2 to 49 years of age who are not pregnant and who do not have any underlying, medical conditions.
Johnson said “although the Flu Mist has been used very effectively in providing the influenza vaccine to children, there may be some mild and short lasting side effects. These effects may include runny nose, nasal congestion or cough, chills, tiredness/weakness, sore throat and headaches.
