What is the Master Gardener program?
It is a Cooperative Extension Service Horticulture Volunteer program. This program is designed to give participants horticulture education in an eight week course, once weekly all day sessions. Soils, insects, flowers, vegetables, and lawns are just a few of the topics covered. More importantly, this program is designed to get volunteer help for the Extension Office on projects that are directed by or Ok’d by the Extension Service Educator in that county. The education is just a way to prepare participants for their volunteer work. The Master Gardener program was started by an Extension Educator in Oregon who needed help with the Horticulture Extension Program in his county. Since then, it has spread across the U.S. with most states now having a program.
