Although we have had a wet winter, we know that we will have dry conditions later. Two presentations at the free Spring Home and Garden Show at the Expo Conference Center will give good information on the wise use of water.
Haldor Howard, horticulture professor at OSU-OKC, will provide helpful water use information at 12 noon on Saturday, March 6.
At 3 p.m. that day, Asia Scudder, Oklahoma City landscape consultant, will talk about plants that require less water.
Howard says, “There are many opportunities to use water resources carefully in the landscape. Some of these are quite simple. Others could be part of a landscape makeover. All of them are worthwhile and interesting.” His presentation is titled, “Making the Most of Water in Your Lawn and Garden.”
Scudder, of Zahori Landscapes, has a strong background in ecology.
She incorporates organic soil building, low water use plant materials including native plant materials where possible, and wise watering practices in all of her designs. She has been creating gardens in Central Oklahoma since 1993. Her presentation is titled, “Making Every Drop Count – Low-Water Use Plants for a Successful Garden.”
Other presentations on Saturday include two sessions by Joe Benton, Pottawatomi County OSU extension educator on vegetable gardening and two sessions by Gina Peek, OSU Cooperative Extension Housing and Consumer Specialist, concerning home energy saving tips.
The Spring Home and Garden Show is organized by the Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee and the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center. The show is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. on Friday, March 5; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 6; and noon to 4 p.m on Sunday, March 7. Vendors of home and garden supplies and services will have displays and merchandise for information and purchase each day of the show.
Free admission to the show is made possible by the sponsors, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Shawnee Council of Garden Clubs, The Shawnee News-Star, and Unity Health Center plus support from Shawnee Convention and Visitor Bureau.
