When do I plant fescue in my yard?

Fescue is used in Oklahoma lawns in areas that are shady. Fescue, however, still needs some sunlight. Usually two to four hours, depending upon soil conditions. It’s best to get a couple hours of full sunlight and a couple of hours of dappled light. Fescue is planted in Oklahoma from Sept. 15 through late October. It is best planted in a good, prepared seed bed with fertilizer requirements that come from soil sample results. There are many varieties to choose from, for a lawn select a turf variety. We have a fact sheet here at the OSU Extension Office that talks about Oklahoma lawns and gives a few of the recommended varieties.
For more information contact, the OSU Extension Center, 14001 Acme Road, in Shawnee or call 273-7683.
