I have these grass-looking plants that first appeared in my flower beds and now are spreading to my lawn. What can I do?
I had a specimen brought into me for identification. This is Yellow Nutsedge. It spreads rapidly and its leaves are flat or slightly corrugated. It grows more quickly than the surrounding Bermuda after being mowed. If allowed to seed, the head will be yellowish-brown. The easiest way to ID this plant is that the stem is triangular, not round. If you dig down deep enough, you will find it attached to a round tuber. So pulling it does not work, as it detaches from the tuber, grows and multiplies. Most lawn chemicals will not touch it. It requires certain herbicides for control. Sedgehammer and Manage, with an active ingredient of halosulfuron, and Certainty, with an active ingredient of sulfosulfuron, are both labeled for control. There are other labeled herbicides. Re-application according to the label will be necessary. Read and follow directions and label.
