The Louise Counts Park between the Shawnee Public Library and the Hamburger King/Richards Drug building is a good place to stop and sit a few minutes when downtown. The members of Redbud Garden Club spent several hours recently grooming the park’s planting bed for the summer.
The club members refer to this park as the Louise Counts Park in honor of their former member who was a vital part of the Shawnee Community. For several years she wrote gardening articles for The Shawnee News-Star. The club planted a redbud tree in the center of the bed in her honor and provided a plaque beside it.
Plantings in the park take into account that very little direct sunlight reaches the planting bed. Variegated Liriope muscari is used to edge the bed’s modified diamond shape. Other plants include English boxwood, iris, day lilies, variegated Maiden grass, periwinkles, lamb’s ear, sedum and creeping phlox. A large boulder south of the redbud tree adds hardscape interest. In addition Janet Turner planted a variety of flower seeds that were provided by the Park Seed Company of Greenwood, S.C.
Those who were involved with the project of cleaning, planting and/or furnishing plants and supplies included Kaye Miller, unit president, Arlene Scott, Judy Piggott, Joyce Spencer, Barbara Murphy and Turner. When you see one of these ladies, thank them for their efforts to keep Shawnee clean and beautiful.
