Donna and Ed Guthrie, longtime members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee, have created a beautiful garden east of the church building near the preschool play area that attracts butterflies.
Most of the plants are perennials or will reseed themselves. I wrote about the creeping phlox at their home earlier this year. Both are master gardeners and have a special touch with plants.
Several plants of a newly developed dwarf butterfly bush are included in the planting. It is a true dwarf and grows to a maximum height of 3 feet and doesn’t need to be deadheaded. It blooms until frost, is drought tolerant and is a perennial.
The botanical name is Buddleia x Blue Chip. It is produced in the Lo and Behold series by Proven Winners.
Both red and purple varieties of Autumn Sage, Salvia greggii, another drought tolerant perennial, are in the bed along with “Becky” daisies, two varieties of Gaillardia, rose moss and citronella plant.
Purple, red, pink, lavender and variegated verbenas are the “show stoppers” in this garden. They are perennial and each color has blooms that cover about two to three feet of space.
Ed installed an attractive sandstone colored edging. It is a good contrast to the white painted concrete and picket fence that forms the north edge of this bed.
