Seasoned vegetable gardeners, first time vegetable gardeners, and people who just plant veggies in containers can get valuable information Saturday, March 6, at the Spring Home and Gardening Show in the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Conference Center. Joe Benton, Pottawatomie County OSU extension educator will present “Vegetable Gardening, Oklahoma Style” at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Gina Peek, OSU Cooperative Extension Housing and Consumer Specialist, will offer home energy saving ideas with her topic, “Top Quick and Easy Home Energy Savings Tips” at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.
Benton is a regular contributor of horticulture related columns in The Shawnee News-Star. He frequently provides informational programs at the OSU Extension Office, Acme Road and MacArthur Street.
Peek is native of Wisconsin and has two degrees from the University of Georgia, earning her Ph. D. in Housing and Consumer Economics. Prior to joining the OSU faculty in January she was employed by the Georgia Cooperative Extension program.
She and her husband have two small children including a daughter who is involved in the Payne County 4-H program.
About her presentation she says, “It does not matter if you own or rent, there are many simple things that consumers can do to save energy and money around the house. It is best to take a holistic approach.”
Visitors to the show will have an opportunity to see and visit with vendors of home and gardening related supplies and services. Master Gardeners will offer suggestions for attracting birds to the yard and will have activities for children to enjoy.
Two other presentations are scheduled for Saturday. At noon, Haldor Howard will discuss use of water in the lawn and garden and at 3 p.m., Asia Scudder will provide information about low water use plants for the landscape. She will also make this presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Spring Home and Garden Show is organized by the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee and the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center. The free of admission show is open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The free admission is made possible by the show sponsors, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Shawnee Council of Garden Clubs, Shawnee News-Star, and Unity Health Center. The Shawnee Convention and Visitor Center also provides assistance.
