Many dogs will spend the holidays without homes this year but a local group is asking for help to ensure the dogs won’t go without gifts this Christmas.
Canine Companions for Independence will sponsor the Dog Angel Tree, located near the Food Court in Shawnee Mall throughout the next few weeks. Canine Companions has sponsored the tree for four years.
“The tree will have the tags with the names of five different non-profits groups on them — one name on each tag,” Dawn Ramsey, Shawnee, said. “All of the rescue groups are asking for food or a donation of cash. People can also give chain collars, leashes, toys, treats, certificates for vet visits, grooming certificates, brushes, kennels — anything dog-related.”
Once a donor has purchased a gift for one of the dogs, he or she should attach the tag selected from the tree to the purchased item and return both to the Shawnee Mall Office during regular business hours. During weekends, the gifts and tags may be returned to the tree, where a volunteer will receive the items between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
“All the items will be given to the group designated on the tag that has been attached to the item,” Ramsey said. “If you do not see the rescue organization of your choice, take a blank tag and write in the name and we will see that they get their gift or donation.”
Non-profit agencies participating in the Dog Angel Tree program include Canine Companions for Independence; SPAR — Saving Pets at Risk; Fast Hound Greyhounds; Animal Safety Center; and Room for One More.
