A fundraiser event designed for dogs will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Woodland Veterans Park Aquatics Center.
The event, which includes three organizations — Canine Companions for Independence, Saving Pets at Risk and Animal Rescue Center of Shawnee, will use the city’s municipal pool to host a dog pool party.
As preparations are being made for the pool party, volunteers who can serve as life guards for the dogs are needed.
The fundraiser was originally scheduled for Sept. 18 and many volunteers had signed up for the event but the date was changed due to the YMCA of Shawnee deciding to close the pool one week earlier than initially thought. Therefore, additional volunteers are needed.
A total of at least 12 volunteers is needed, including some for registration and fee collection duties and others for assistance with the dogs in the pool.
One “pup guard” is needed for each three dogs in the pool and if the pool becomes too crowded, owners will have to remove their animals until a safe limit is again reached.
All dogs must have proof of current vaccinations and must wear a collar and at least a four-foot leash for safety reasons.
The dogs may be off the leashes while in the pool, as the volunteers in the water will have leashes “in case a dog gets into trouble, so they can assist them in getting out and handing over the leash to the person on the deck,” Dawn Ramsey, CCI volunteer events coordinator, said. However, leashes must be worn by the dogs when out of the pool.
The pool party will make use of the five-foot area of the pool and will include a doggy swim from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Owners are not allowed in the pool during the swim.
Tennis balls will be provided and other toys will not be allowed in the pool area during the event.
A mandatory five-minute rest period will be held each hour for the animals and the volunteers who are in the water.
All donations will be divided between the three agencies hosting the fundraiser.
Registration for the event is held on the day of the fundraiser at the pool and the cost is $5 per dog attending. Families may enter free or may offer a donation, if desired, but family members may not enter the water unless he or she is a registered volunteer for the event.
