The St. Benedict Fish Fry is heading into it’s 10th year of fundraising for the church Youth Group.
Every year the money is used for a specific purpose. In the past the dinners have helped fund trips to National Youth Conferences, mission trips and even a pilgrimage to Rome.
This year, the fish fry suppers will help fund students from St. Benedict Church to attend the March for Life and Youth Rally in Washington. The Rally will be a great opportunity for students to stand for what they believe in with nearly half a million other people from across the nation.
The tradition of Catholics eating fish on Friday dates back to the Apostles. The idea behind the abstinence from meat is that Christ sacrificed his body, his flesh on a Friday, so people too can sacrifice the eating of flesh on Friday, as a unified, Christian body. This means that Catholics give up eating beef, poultry and pork on Fridays during Lent.
“It is due to this that we at St. Benedict offer as a fundraiser to the Shawnee community (and beyond) our annual, humble, Lenten Fish Fry Supper of catfish, hush-puppies, fries, cole-slaw and beans”, said Anthony Keiser, Youth Director at St. Benedict Church. Keiser gives credit to John Rick who has been volunteering to head up the Fish Fry Suppers since 2006. Anthony says,”He does an excellent job.”
There are still two weeks left to enjoy the Fish Fry Suppers; Friday, March 19, and Friday, March 26. The Fish Fry is all you can eat and the time is 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Benedict Center.
