You really can’t get here from there. I’m sure you have heard someone say that. Well, that is the way I felt upon leaving the beautiful San Francisco Bay where I lived through my high school years.
God had called me to preach and it meant a complete turn around from what my plans were. I found myself on a train headed for Shawnee and Oklahoma Baptist University, thanks to the encouragement of a Rev. Mac McCray.
While I was excited about it all, there was to be a “down side” that would include overwhelming loneliness, home sickness and constant examination with the question: “Is this really what God wants you to do?”
I would look at the moon at night and remind myself that is the same moon that is shining over my home in California.
But then I found in faculty members and many other students and OBU friends encouragement to keep my commitment to obey the Lord Jesus. Among the faculty members were people like Eddie and Lucille Hurt.
Mrs. Hurt went to be with the Lord this past week at the age of 101. I remember that at every contact I had with her and husband Ed, was a time of encouragement to be faithful to my calling and to work as hard as I could to do God’s will.
When I felt alone it was Lucille Hurt’s words of encouragement that God has plans for me and to be faithful to His word that gave me strength and confidence that I was where God wanted me.
Her life and words of encouragement still brings me a lot of peace. Thinking of Lucille’s life and Christian spirit reminds me often of what the Lord said: “I will never leave you, nor forsake you. So we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. For Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace...” (see Hebrews 13:5-10).
God has always kept His word. I am glad He uses other believers to remind us He is faithful and will fulfill His promises.
Thank you Lord for Lucille Hurt, And as I celebrate 65 years of ministry sharing His word and 56 wonderful years with a loving wife, I can pray: God bless OBU.
