For those who wish to become Catholic but are not sure what steps to take, St. Benedict Catholic Church, Shawnee, is offering a process through which individuals can learn the teachings and practices of the Catholic church and become accustomed to the Catholic way of living and praying.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, is a gradual process by which a person undertakes a journey of faith from the inquiry stage to reception of the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist.
It is an ongoing process of conversion that involves active participation of the entire Catholic community and through which the new members and the congregation are bonded as a community of faith through sharing and praying together.
Restored in the Second Vatican Council, RCIA embodies several insights and practices of the early Christian Church.
Central to the RCIA model is the establishment of a close relationship between catechesis, or teaching the faith, and liturgy — celebrating the faith.
This is achieved through participation by the entire Catholic community, with each member contributing their particular skills and ministries.
The first RCIA session at St. Benedict Church will be 7 p.m. Tuesday in the community room of the Massoth Education Building, 632 N. Kickapoo. Anyone interested in joining the Catholic church or just obtaining more information is invited to attend. There is no obligation, commitment or pressure to become a Catholic. Those wishing to continue with the RCIA process to eventually become a full-fledge Catholic will be assigned a sponsor, who is a member of the Catholic community. The role of the sponsor is to lend support and encouragement to the new member. The sponsor represents the parish community and becomes a friend to the enquirer by introducing him or her to the Catholic way of life.
For more information, call Deacon David Schrupp at 273-1173.
