St. Benedict Catholic Church in Shawnee will conduct a blood drive in partnership with Oklahoma Blood Institute from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Benedict Center, 632 N. Kickapoo.
Healthy individuals who are at least 17 and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds are eligible to donate.
Donors are asked to eat a well-balanced meal and increase fluid intake prior to donating. Aspirin should be avoided 48 hours before donating. A photo ID is required of all potential donors.
All donors will receive a free health screening, which includes blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperature and iron level check for anemia. In addition, they also will receive a free cholesterol check.
OBI is dependent on volunteer blood donors. Its primary source of blood supply is through blood drives conducted in partnership with businesses, civic organizations, clubs, schools, churches and other entities.
Through component fractionation, each unit of blood can be separated into red blood cells, plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate. Subsequently, a single donation may be administered to as many as four different patients depending on their transfusion needs.
The shelf life of these components varies but is generally limited. Red blood cells must be used within 42 days and platelets within five days of collection. Hence, there is an ongoing need for blood donors.
OBI reports that it is currently especially in need of O negative blood. O negative individuals are urged to come and donate.
Chris Anson, blood drive coordinator at St. Benedict Church, said that as an added incentive, all blood donors will receive an OU or OSU T-shirt of their choice.
In addition, they will also receive “Member for Life” points, with which they can exchange for items on OBI’s online store or use them toward tests for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) or a “Heart Check.” Heart Check is a program designed by OBI to help individuals identify potential risk factors for heart disease.
