Shawn and Amber Crawley of Shawnee will be offering an eight-week Christian course for couples on preparing for marriage. Shawn holds a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from OBU, and as a couple, they’ve ministered to young families for eight years. Appointed by the North American Mission Board, they currently minister full-time in their local church and in their local association of churches, helping to equip and strengthen relationships using a biblical foundation. Shawn also teaches at OBU and with Family Expectations in Oklahoma City. Amber oversees Christian Family Academy, a cooperative effort of local homeschooling families based in the Shawnee area.
The classes will be at the OBU’s Geiger Center in the second level faculty lounge on Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The classes begin March 2 and will run through April 27. Class will not meet March 16 due to spring break.
The Crawleys have offered pre-marital counseling to individual couples for years, but thought it would be a good idea to offer it as a course that would encourage community and accountability in a Christian environment. As a part of the course, the Crawleys also plan to meet with each couple for a one-on-one visit, so they can get to know them a bit more, and address any additional concerns the couple’s might have.
The core basics of strong marriages will be covered, including communication, family of origin differences, how to handle finances, intimacy and sexuality in marriage, problem solving, working as a team and spiritual leadership of the home.
The sessions are open to any couple in the Shawnee area planning to marry in 2009. Research has proven again and again that those couples who invest time in learning relationship skills and building a biblical foundation for their marriage, have a much lower divorce rate and a greater level of marital satisfaction. The course will discuss not only “content issues,” such as finances or sexuality, but also equip couples for the “process” of handling those issues over the life of the relationship.
The state of Oklahoma, in an effort to encourage couples to seek pre-marital counseling, reduces the cost of a marriage license from $50 to only $5 for those who present proof of completion of a premarital preparation course. This course will meet that requirement.
There is no charge for the sessions, but a contribution to the ministry is welcome.
For more information or to register for the course, call Shawn at 405-229-5813.
