For the father in despair, struggling to find work to support his family, Catholic Charities helps him find employment and learn new skills.
For the despondent immigrant and his family facing deportation, Catholic charities infuses rays of encouragement with representation and legal services. For those who suffer from AIDS, Catholic Charities volunteers deliver more than nutritional meals that sustain the physical needs.  Often times they provide the human contact that nurtures the soul.
For the scared pregnant teen, homeless and alone with no place or no one to turn to, Catholic Charities performs works of love by providing a home, support family, and practical life skills.
For those who become victims of natural disasters, such as the Lone Grove tornado this past spring, Catholic Charities provides assistance, shelter and help in rebuilding.
These are examples of how Catholic Charities, either by working in partnership with parishes and communities in central and western Oklahoma or through funding, comes to the aid of many living in Oklahoma.
Catholic Charities is a private, nonprofit, social services agency.  Founded in 1912, Catholic Charities has continued a tradition of providing the people of Oklahoma with a wide range of social, educational, legal and immigration-related services.
Its mission statement “To put into practice gospel values of justice, love, compassion and hope through service, empowerment and advocacy” is carried out daily.
Despite its Catholic affiliation, all programs are available to all persons regardless of age, sex, race, creed, religion, or ability to pay. Other programs and services funded by Catholic Charities include housing sponsorships, substance abuse prevention, infant foster care, marriage and family therapy, English as a second language classes, senior adult ministry and many more.
To make it possible to continue and to improve the programs and services it sponsors, Catholic Charities conducts an archdiocesan-wide campaign each fall to meet its budget.  The goal for this year’s appeal is $2.4 million.
This weekend, parishioners of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Shawnee will be joining parishes across the archdiocese to make a financial commitment to support Catholic Charities.
A recorded message about Catholic Charities will be played to congregations at all Masses this weekend at St. Benedict Church in an effort to appeal to parishioners to sign a pledge card to support Catholic Charities.
“Catholic Charities is at the heart of our Catholic faith,” the Most Rev. Eusebius Beltran, Archbishop of Oklahoma City, said.  “Catholic Charities is the united effort of the Catholic community of this Archdiocese in addressing the situation of those who are in need.”
Beltran also stated that due to the recent economic downturn and increasing unemployment, there has been a greater need for services which Catholic Charities provides.
“Consequently, there is a need for increased funding to assure the continuance of these services,” Beltran added.
Beltran exhorts all Catholics in the archdiocese to participate generously and prayerfully in this year’s annual campaign.
