“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.”
The above text from Psalm 62:5 (NIV) of the Old Testament in the Christian Bible tells us that man’s only source of eternal hope is in God. Here, instead of hope, the King James Bible uses the word expectation. This comes from a Hebrew term which can also mean a cord or a rope. Thus, our hope is tied only to God. The term occurs in the Bible in Proverbs and in Psalms seven places: a perfect number. In Psalm 62:8, the term is reflexive of a poetic parallel thought in verse 1 where expectation is salvation.
The New Testament records that shortly after his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his followers saying: “All things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.”(Luke 24:44) Christian Faith flows from the resurrected Christ as the source of eternal, living hope (I Peter 3 NIV). Only through our claim of faith in him can we have forgiveness for sin, and the hopeful expectation of eternal life in God’s presence (John 5:24, Colossians 1:13-14, Revelation 1:18). Jesus fulfills God’s offer of hope for the world (I John 2:2). Let Christ fulfill God’s offer of eternal hope for you. Claim him as Lord now.
