A Shawnee man faces a first-degree manslaughter charge in connection with an April 16 stabbing death in Tecumseh.
Brandon Ray Powers, 31, is charged with the felony in Pottawatomie County District Court. He is accused of stabbing Matthew Wayne Weger, 26, in the left side of his chest with a pocket knife, court documents show.
Powers is accused of unlawfully, willfully and intentionally stabbing Weger, “while in a heat of passion and without a design to effect death,” the charge reads.
The stabbing occurred during a street disturbance about 6:30 p.m. in the 400 block of North First Street in Tecumseh.
Police said Weger was visiting someone at one house on that block while Powers was visiting someone else at another home.
An arrest affidavit shows that Weger and Powers exchanged “fighting words” before Powers got into his car, according to a witness. At that time, Weger allegedly starting pulling on the driver’s side door and tried to punch Powers through the car window, the affidavit alleges, before Powers stabbed Weger through the open window.
After the stabbing, Weger reportedly backed way from the car and Powers left the area, the affidavit reads.
Weger was taken to Unity Health Center, then transferred to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
As officers worked the crime scene April 16, Powers was identified as the possible suspect.
Tecumseh and Shawnee police officers, along with district attorney’s agents, searched for him overnight. A tip the next day led Moore police to a home in that city, where they arrested Powers without incident.
Powers was booked into the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center, where he was jailed six days before being released on a $25,000 bond.
If convicted of first-degree manslaughter, Powers could face imprisonment for no less than four years, the court filing shows. With a previous felony conviction of robbery with a dangerous weapon from 1995, the felony filing shows he could face imprisonment up to 10 years, if convicted.
His next court date for a pre-preliminary hearing docket is scheduled for June 4.
