Six seek sheriff's seat

Four vie for District 2 county commission

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

At the end of a three-day filing period, there are six candidates in the race for Pottawatomie County sheriff, four in the District 2 County Commission race and two candidates for county clerk.
In the race for sheriff, a former reserve deputy and tribal officer filed his declaration of candidacy Wednesday. Chris Hurley, 47, Shawnee, is running on the Republican side.
Also filing as a Republican Monday was Jerry Farris 46, Wanette.
On the Democratic side, Incumbent Sheriff Kurt C. Shirey, 56, Tecumseh, will face three party opponents — Mike Booth, 51, McLoud, Gary D. Roe, 46, Tecumseh and Jay Hoyt Davis, 53, Shawnee.
Davis is a retired Shawnee police officer; Roe is the current police chief at McLoud, and Booth is a district attorney investigator. Farris is employed with the Cleveland County sheriff’s office.
A fourth candidate in the District 2 County Commission race filed Wednesday, with all running as Democrats.
Leslie Poff, 35, Macomb, joined that race Wednesday. Incumbent Jerry Richards, 66, filed for re-election Monday, as did J.C. Jackson, 65, Shawnee, and Charles G. Carthen, 55, Tecumseh.
Incumbent Pottawatomie County Clerk Nancy Bryce, 53, drew an opponent late Wednesday. Alicia Warner, 34, Tecumseh, worked in the county clerk’s office many years ago.
Incumbent Pottawatomie County Court Clerk Reta Head, 54, drew no opponents and won re-election to a second, four-year term.
The primary election for the county races is June 29.
