Two Texans and an Oklahoman had emerged as the leaders in the competition for the coveted All-Around titles this week at the International Finals Youth Rodeo.
Second round action was being completed with Friday night’s performance at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center, setting the stage for today’s final round.
Today’s final performance is scheduled for 2 p.m. It will feature the top 15 contestants in each of the 10 events, including ties, at the end of Friday night’s action. More than 800 contestants have competed throughout the week, seeking to win around $200,000 in prize money, saddles and buckles.
Leading in the bid for the boy’s All-Around title is Checotah’s Riley Duvall. Competing in calf roping and steer wrestling, Duvall has won a total of $670.68. He finished tied for second place in the first round of steer wrestling with a time of 4.2, and that earned him a check for $592.02. He also won $78.66 in the calf roping, sharing eighth for his time of 10.1 seconds.
Last year’s All-Around cowboy, Johnny Salvo of Datil, N.M., was not eligible to return since 2007 was his final year being able to compete here.
A pair of Texas cowgirls were ahead in the contest for the girl’s All-Around championship. Kodi Bailey, Stephenville, Texas has won $2,030.67 in two events so far, and Pampa’s Carley Richardson has earned $623.07 in two events.
Bailey also, through Friday morning’s performance, continued to lead both the second round of pole bending with a time of 20.029 and the average (for the championship) with a combined time of 39.899. Bailey is the only pole bender to break the 20-second mark in the event so far this week.
She’s assured of making it to today’s final round in the pole bending.
Last year’s All-Around title holder, Jessi Eagleberger of Stringtown, remained in first place in the second round of goat tying with a time of 7.9 seconds. But Eagleberger’s goat kicked out after being tied during Wednesday morning’s performance in the first round, so she won’t make it to the finals in that event.
But she was still alive in the pole bending where she placed fifth in the initial round with a time of 20.268 seconds. The Stringtown cowgirl won $341.55 for her efforts, and she was competing again Friday night in that event.
She was also competing in the barrel racing and breakaway roping Friday night. In the barrels she still could make it back to the finals. In the breakaway though, while she could win money in the second round, she failed to mark a time on her first run Monday and she won’t make it to the finals in that event either.
An Oklahoma calf roper sits in the top spot in both the second round and for the championship. Marco Thompson of Okmulgee recorded a time of 8.0 in the second round, and has a combined time of 18.4 seconds through the initial two rounds. Thompson is assured of making today’s finals.
Micah Samples, Abilene, Kan., is first in the second round of barrels after running the pattern in 16.233 seconds. Her combined time is 32.940, just ahead of Devine, Texas barrel racer Devin Caddell whose time in two runs is 33.153.
First round winner in the barrels, Karson Bizzell, Oklahoma City, is in third in the race for the championship at 33.227.
There was no change in the top spot in the bull riding competition since Thursday morning’s performance. Elliott Jacoby, Fredricksburg, Texas, holds the lead still at 154 after marking scores of 75 and 79 through the initial two rounds.
Leading the second round is another Texan, Chandler Bownds from Lubbock with an 82. That score was good enough to place him fifth in the average through Friday’s performance.
Only four bull riders had stayed on the required eight seconds during rounds one and two so far.
Others leading the average through Friday morning’s performance and their events include:
Team roping: Codee Reynolds, Huntsville, Ark., and Cody Roberts, Norman, Ark., 11.6. They also lead the second round with a time of 5.2 seconds.
Saddle broncs: Caleb Sanderson, Kissimmee, Fla.,  136.
Goat tying: Jodi Stewart, Fairmont, Ga., 17.4 seconds.
Breakaway roping: Callie Griffith, Decature, Texas, 5.6 seconds.
Steer wrestling: Colt Fisher, Sulphur, La., 8.2 seconds.
Bareback riding: James Bond, Goodman, Mo., 150.
