A manhunt initiated south of Chandler Saturday evening after a suspect ditched a vehicle following a high-speed pursuit from Shawnee was called off early Sunday morning, but the investigation is far from over.
Detectives are now trying to determine if there’s a connection between that manhunt and a suspect who was arrested on a burglary complaint in Lincoln County Sunday, and possibly a connection to a stolen pickup reported Sunday in the same area.
The initial pursuit began just after 7 p.m. at Highland and Draper Streets in Shawnee after Cpl. Dave Carpenter tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation after the driver of that vehicle allegedly drove into the officer’s driving lane, causing him to swerve.
After failing to stop, the suspect drove through several reported road blocks and continued north on SH 18 through Meeker, where the vehicle reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, according to scanner reports.
The suspect reportedly ran his vehicle off the road along a curve south of Chandler and fled on foot, officials said. The abandoned vehicle was found loaded with weapons which have now been linked to a home burglary that occurred in Pottawatomie County.
Two weapons stolen during that burglary were not in the suspect’s vehicle, so it was believed the suspect or suspects were armed with those weapons while on the run.
After searching the wooded area and even using the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s helicopter with heat sensor equipment, the manhunt was called off early Sunday morning.
According to authorities, a suspect was arrested during a home burglary in Lincoln County Sunday, while a pickup reported stolen from that area also was found burned.
Pottawatomie County sheriff’s detectives investigating the burglary involving the firearms are now probing a possible link between all of these incidents while Shawnee police complete their reports on the pursuit.
Watch for updates as they become available.
