SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Voters approved a one-cent sales tax increase in McLoud Tuesday, while school board members were elected in Dale and Macomb and council members were elected in Maud, McLoud and Bethel Acres.
Municipal elections
In Bethel Acres, voters elected trustees for Wards 3 and 4.
For Ward 4, James Thomas Smothers II defeated T.W. Garrison. Smothers had 122 votes compared to Garrison’s 44 votes.
For Ward 3, an unexpired term, voters elected Mike Jackson with 115 votes or 69.70 percent. Wesley H. Bynum Jr. had 50 votes.
Three votes separated candidates in the race for Maud’s Ward 2 council seat. Roger Cunningham was elected with 34 votes compared to Jeff Everett’s tally of 31 votes.
In McLoud, voters elected Ron Kenyon as their a Ward 4 council member with 61 votes. Opponent John R. Heusdens had 30 votes.
McLoud voters also approved two sales tax propositions on their ballot. Both passed with the same number of votes — 75 people or 66.37 percent voted yes while 38 people voted no.
Proposition No. 1 asked voters to approve an additional one-penny city of McLoud sales tax.
In McLoud, the sales tax was 8.5 percent for every dollar spent and will now be 9.5 cents. Of that, McLoud will get 4 cents compared to the previous three cents, while Pottawatomie County gets one cent and the state gets the remaining 4.5 percent. The proposition shows the additional McLoud sales tax will be used for improvements and additions to the city’s sewer and water facilities, for repairs and maintenance of roads and streets and other infrastructure within the city.
Proposition 2 in McLoud asked voters to approve a 5 percent occupancy tax for hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and other overnight accommodations.
School boards
In Macomb, voters unseated a longtime incumbent in the race for the office No. 4 school board post.
Barry Boydstun tallied 120 votes to defeat Mary J. Sulivant, who had 75 votes.
In Dale, five votes separated the opponents vying for the Office No. 4 seat.
Keith Cook had 100 votes, or 51.28 percent, compared to Angela McKinney, who had 95 votes, 48.72 percent.
A total of 721 ballots were cast in Tuesday’s Pottawatomie County elections.
