A Tuttle cowboy has been calf roping with his dad for years and travels to rodeo events on weekends. This week he hopes to do well in Shawnee at the International Finals Youth Rodeo.
Travis Rogers, 17, attends Bridge Creek High School, where he will be a senior this fall. He is making his second IFYR appearance, competing in calf roping.
He started roping at young age because his dad was always involved in calf roping, he said. Rogers has been competing in rodeos since age 10. It takes determination and lots of practice every day, “if you want to win,” he said.
This is large rodeo event compared to others he’s competed in, he said, but it will be fun meeting new people. He has a philosophy in getting ready for a ride and hopes to do well this week.
“You gotta get your mind right and block everything else out,” he said, “and go do what you do every day.”
Rogers is the son of Randy and Tammie Rogers. His sister, Lacey Rogers, now a college student, previously competed in the IFYR.
His future plans include attending college, where he’d like to major in accounting.
