Another business is stepping up to help the Shawnee Police Foundation with its fundraiser to purchase bulletproof vests for officers.
R&R Overhead Door Co., 18806 Brangus Road, will join other businesses in making a contribution based on sales.
R&R Overhead Door Co. is owned and operated by Randy Whiteside and his son, Randy Jr.
They will donate $20 on every garage door sold, $10 for every remote sold and $10 for every service call made now until the first of next year.
Being a small business means they are open Monday through Saturday and can set hours on customer needs.
Whiteside, a veteran of Desert storm, said he believes the bulletproof vests are worth it because he realizes the importance of protection when entering a building.
“We need to give this protection to our police officers,” he said.
The SPF is conducting a drive to raise funds for miniature video cameras and bulletproof vests.
The lapel cameras will go wherever the officer goes, and that footage can be used as evidence and for training purposes. Each camera costs about $150. The bulletproof vests cost about $2,500 each.
Bob Seikel, chairman of the fundraising committee for SPF, said they would like to raise about $37,000.
Donations can be sent to Shawnee Police Foundation, P.O. Box 32, Shawnee, OK 74802.
