SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Tuesday evening, Shawnee Police officers, with the assistance of the 2 Much 2 Lose youth group, conducted alcohol sale compliance checks at local convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores. Underage youth attempted to buy alcohol at nine stores.
“Of the nine stores checked, four clerks sold alcohol to the youth. The four clerks have been cited,” Shawnee Police Department Cpl. Dan Shumaker said.
Shumaker said these numbers are too high. To make matters worse, two of the purchases came from two liquor stores, where youth are not even supposed to be inside, he said.
“It is a violation for anyone to enter these businesses under 21 years of age,” he said.
The compliance checks were part of the 2 Much 2 Lose effort to combat underage drinking in Shawnee.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, about 40 percent of all fatal traffic crashes occurring in Oklahoma involve alcohol.
Anyone with information on any business that sells beer or liquor to underage individuals can call the Shawnee Police Crime Stoppers at 273-0989.
