Sterling House of Shawnee is holding an open house Monday through Friday as part of National Assisted Living Week, with an emphasis on honoring residents with Alzheimer’s.
This year’s theme is “Filling Our Life With Love,” which highlights the privilege, value and responsibility of passing senior legacies through the generations. The following are events for the week:
Monday, the theme is “Love of Art.” A display of quilts will be shown throughout the building. Donna Merkt, curator of education from Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, will conduct a hands-on art project and explain the meaning of her art. Local home-schooled children will help Merkt, who will display her art at 2 p.m. At 6 p.m., the “All About Irish” dancers will perform.
Tuesday, the theme is “Love of Family.” A silent auction will be open to the public. Bidding ends at 5:30 p.m., and results will be announced at 7 p.m. Proceeds go to the Alzheimer’s Association. Bible study will be held at 10 a.m.
Wednesday’s theme is “Love of Music” and events begin at 10 a.m. with a gospel singing. At 2 p.m., the String Music Guys will perform.
Thursday’s theme is “Love of Country.” Visitors can see a “Hall of Heroes” dedicated to past and present heroes. The wall will feature memorabilia of loved ones, including veterans from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm and Iraq, as well as firefighters, police and EMTs.
Friday’s theme is “Love of Memory — Taking Steps to End Alzheimer’s.” A memory walk will be held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association. It is a pledge-based event, and people can register as individuals or teams.
Registration will be at Sterling House from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Cost is $15 and the first 50 people will receive a Memory Walk T-shirt. Participants will walk at the Shawnee Regional Airport walking track beginning at 10 a.m. at the Japanese Garden.
From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sterling House will offer health screenings provided by 10 home health, hospice and geriatric services.
