SHS seniors receive academic letter jackets

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Just in time for cooler temperatures across the state, the top 5 percent of 2010 Shawnee High School graduating seniors received academic letter jackets from Arvest Bank Tuesday.
A total of 16 seniors received the jackets, which were purchased by Arvest, during the 26th Academic Letter Jacket Reception.

The Pottawatomie County Health Department, in collaboration with the Shawnee Public Schools, will host an H1N1 vaccine clinic on Thursday, Nov. 19 at Will Rogers Elementary School. The clinic is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.


City surrenders leases

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Despite months of resistance and despite accusations by Shawnee City Commissioner James Harrod that Gov. Brad Henry and Commissioners of the Land Office were “bullying” the city, the city commission voted 5-2 Monday to relinquish their lease agreement with the CLO and to allow 28 lessees to lease directly from the state.
City Commissioners Carl Holt, Billy Collier, John Winterringer and Frank Sims were joined by Mayor Linda Peterson in their vote to approve relinquishment. Vice Mayor Pam Stephens, along with Harrod, voted against the motion.

Board of Education calls special meeting

The Shawnee Board of Education has called a special meeting for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17.
The board will consider and take action on a resolution determining the maturities of, and setting a date, time and place for the sale of the $3 million General Oblication Building Bonds of the school district.

The Pottawatomie Alliance Toward Community Health began hosting a series of activities Nov. 14, which will continue through Nov. 21 to celebrate “Tobacco-Free Oklahoma Week” and promote protections for Oklahomans from secondhand smoke, model healthy behaviors for our youth, and help support tobacco users who are trying to quit.

Extended deadline helps residents receive tax credit

Tax credits have helped some in Shawnee purchase as many as four homes.
