What began as a regularly scheduled workshop for City Commissioners has turned into a special meeting this week.

On Friday, commissioners are set to meet at 9 a.m. at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center; the public is welcome to attend.

The board routinely uses workshops to discuss, in general, many topics within city government — but no action is taken during these more casual gatherings.

On Tuesday a special meeting agenda was sent out, letting the community know about the addition of an item that may require action.

Added to the agenda is an item giving Commissioners the option of going into executive session to discuss potential claims, litigation or other options relating to the potential detachment of property located in Section 2, Township 10N, Range 3E — which is the mile section between 45th Street and MacArthur Street, and between Acme Road and Leo Street — where several properties sit, including St. Gregory's University and Ashford Place Apartments.

The board may determine whether to take action after discussing the item.

Afterward, board members will spend the rest of the retreat discussing issues within city government, the Shawnee Airport Authority (SAA) and Shawnee Municipal Authority (SMA), including possible new initiatives; general discussion of city priorities, projects, goals, long-term needs and funding options; and general discussion of commission policies.
