Shawnee fire crews extinguished two house fires Thursday.

Smoke plumes could be seen from a roof Thursday afternoon as Shawnee fire crews battled a house fire at 420 N. Tucker.

Fire Captain Joe Henry said damage to the home, which has been vacant, was confined to the kitchen area and a back enclosed porch. Fire marshals are probing cause of that blaze.

Before responding to the Tucker Street fire, Shawnee fire crews battled a house fire at a two-story structure with two apartments on West Dill Street.

Henry said the fire started on an outside wall of the downstairs unit, which is 320 W. Dill, and spread to the upstairs unit, 322 W. Dill. Crews got a quick knockdown of the fire and damage was mostly confined to the wall, he said, but there was smoke damage in both units. The Red Cross was on scene to assist the displaced residents. Cause of that fire is also undetermined.
