MCLOUD - In dominating fashion, the Bethel Lady Wildcats beat the McLoud Lady Redskins 48-25 Tuesday night.
“If you take the second quarter out of this one, I thought we played a pretty good game,” Bethel coach Curt Knox said.
Both teams started off hot from beyond the arc, each making two 3-pointers. With the game tied 6-6, the Lady Wildcats went on a 12-5 run to close out the first quarter for an 18-11 lead. Bethel's Paige Delsigne scored 11 points in the quarter.
The Lady Redskins keyed on Delsigne in the second quarter, forcing Knox to rely on other players to pick up the pace offensively. Keagan Engle, Abbey Thompson and Harley Gregory all scored in the second quarter to give the Lady Wildcats a 25-17 lead at the half.
“We encouraged the other girls to step up,” Knox said. “Even though most of the girls are sophomores they've played enough games now to have experience to do it and I think to a degree they did that.”
Bethel took a commanding 38-20 lead at the end of the third quarter in part to relentless defense and some easy layups on the offensive end.
“At halftime we talked about how good defense leads to easy baskets and we got a couple of those tonight,” Knox said.
Other than an early trey in the third quarter for McLoud, the Lady Redskins went scoreless for almost 11 minutes in the second half. In that time the Lady Wildcats went on a 19-0 run.
Delsigne led all scorers with 20. Kirsten Winters chipped in 11 points.
Kaitlyn Hoover led the Lady Redskins with 13 points.
Bethel (10-9) will host the 2A No. 1 Dale Lady Pirates (19-2) Friday. McLoud (3-14) returns to action on Friday when they host 4A No. 2 Harrah (17-1). Both games are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
