BETHEL – Dale's Jeff Edmonson earned career win No. 301 when the Dale Pirates beat the Bethel Wildcats 61-46 Friday night.
Dale held a 16-10 lead through the first quarter. Reid Davenport managed five points through the first frame. The Pirates were able to stretch their lead to 35-20 in the second quarter behind smothering defense and Aaron Hester scoring six points.
“I think on defense we forced a lot of turnovers and those turnovers led to easy baskets,” Edmonson said.
With a 15-point lead at halftime, Dale started the third quarter on a 12-4 run. In that span, Brett Cunningham scored eight points.
“We were pretty consistent throughout,” Edmonson said. “Coming out of the locker room, we wanted to get off to a good start and put the game away. I thought we did a good job. Brett [Cunningham] did a good job for us.”
The Pirates had a double-digit lead heading into the final quarter and the second team had the fourth quarter to themselves. Bethel was able to cut the lead to 16 in part to Peyton Dees scoring seven points but ran out of time.
“We turned it over a few times, but it's nice to let some of the kids on the bench get a chance to play,” Edmonson said.
Dale's Cole Seaborn led all scorers with 18. He also chipped in eight rebounds. Cunningham contributed 10 points. Davenport added nine points and four steals.
Dees led Bethel with 13 points. Anthony Franklin joined him in double figures with 12 points.
Class 2A No. 4 Dale (18-4) will travel to No. 10 Vanoss Tuesday. Bethel (4-16) will hos Beggs. Both games are scheduled for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
