The Shawnee Educational Foundation is pleased to announce that Larry Walker has been selected as the 2017 recipient of its annual Max Brattin Award for Excellence in Education and Community. The award will be formally presented at the Shawnee Educational Foundation Hall of Fame Banquet on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at the Geiger Center, at Oklahoma Baptist University.
Larry Walker has made a positive impact on the public education of students within the community served by the Shawnee Educational Foundation. He has been a Board member for Shawnee Public Schools for fourteen years having served in various leadership roles during that time including President and First Vice President. He has worked diligently to strengthen and improve opportunities for both teachers and students in the Shawnee school district.
Larry Walker also serves on the board of Mission Shawnee and is an active member and deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church. He and his wife, Teri, have two daughters, both of whom graduated from Shawnee High School.
One of the major events at this banquet is the awarding of money grants to deserving teachers, and site grants to schools, in the Shawnee area. The grants fund innovative projects that make a difference in public education classrooms for students in the Shawnee Public Schools, Grove, Pleasant Grove and South Rock Creek Districts. Over $350,000.00 has been awarded by the Foundation, including this year’s grants, in total grant dollars since the inception of the Foundation. This level of help enriches the education of the public school students in our community and surrounding area.
Donations received on or before February 10, 2017, will be listed in the banquet program. Donations can be mailed to the Shawnee Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 3521, Shawnee, OK, 74802-3521. Tickets to the banquet may be purchased for the price of $50.00 per person, and are included within the amount of the donation. Donor levels are as follows: $25 - $99 - Member; $100 - $249 - Patron; $250 - $499 - Benefactor; $500 - $999 - Leadership; $1,000 - $4,999 - Stakeholder; $5,000 and over - Founder. Proceeds from the annual “Hall of Fame Banquet” provide grants to teachers for enhanced educational programs in their classrooms.
