Shawnee resident Margaret G. Alderson, 84, died Wednesday, May 17, 2017, in Shawnee.
Margaret G. Alderson died on May 17, 2017, at St. Anthony Hospital.
She was born on March 9, 1933, to William and Margaret (Turentine) Gordon in Columbia, Tennessee, where she was raised.
Upon graduating from Carver Smith High School, she attended Florida AM University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree.
After James Alderson returned from serving in the Army, they were married on Nov. 26, 1955. They had met through her classmate, Ora Alderson. They moved to Nashville for employment following the birth of their children.
Margaret enjoyed cooking, being outside in the yard, and reading magazines.
After moving to Shawnee in 1979, she started her career with Head Start under the name Action Inc. She worked at three centers: St. Benedict, Wilson School, Neighborhood. The program continues and now goes by the name Cross Roads Head Start. She retired three years ago.
After joining St. Benedict Church, she joined the choir, taught religious Ed and Yvetta, and worked the carnival.
Survivors include James, of the home; daughter: Yvetta Alderson of Shawnee; son: Charles and DeEtta Alderson of Shawnee; granddaughter: Caitlin Alderson of Shawnee; brother: William and Sherrie Gordon of Homewood, Illinois; brother-in-law: Charles Alderson, of Columbia, Tennessee;brother-in-law: Joe (Linda) Alderson of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister-in-law: Ora (James) Yokley, of Columbia, Tennessee; aunt: Barbara Mayberry of Detroit, Michigan; and several cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
A wake service will be at 7 p.m., Monday, May 22, at St. Benedict Catholic Church.
Funeral Mass will be at noon, Tuesday, May 23, at St. Benedict Catholic Church with Fr. Schwarz officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
