Today, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — or until they run out of supplies — the Salvation Army of Shawnee will be giving 600 children a jump start to the school year.

The giveaway will service Pottawatomie, Seminole and Lincoln County residents at the The Salvation Army Administration offices at 200 E. 9th St. in Shawnee.

For students starting kindergarten through eighth grade, free backpacks will be available first come, first serve.

Capt. Jamie Clay said the site will provide school supplies, Family Store Clothing vouchers and backpacks only.

“Parents or guardians must bring with them and provide their photo ID, proof of residency in Pottawatomie, Seminole or Lincoln County, proof of income of household and a birth record/shot record for each child,” Clay said.

Additionally, The Salvation Army Corps will be providing spiritual support for those who inquire, she said, and the Gideons will be providing free Bibles.
