Shirley Willoughby Canham, 90, of Shawnee, passed away on Aug. 7, 2017.

Shirley was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Valdosta, Georgia, to Broadus and Olga Willoughby and grew up in Colquitt, Georgia.

She married Richard Canham on Aug. 23, 1952, in Annapolis, Maryland. They would have celebrated 65 years together.

Shirley graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, after attending Bessie Tift College. She worked as a secretary at the Pentagon before attending The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1953. She spent most of her life working as a registered nurse until retirement.

Shirley was a member of First Baptist Church of Shawnee for 53 years. She earned a master craftsmans certificate in canvas from the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and was a member of numerous needlework organizations. Shirley also worked with the Shawnee Literacy Group to teach English as a second language. She traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe as well Russia and Israel, including mission trips with groups from First Baptist Church.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Dick Canham; her children, Randy and Vickie Canham of Lexington, Kentucky, Andy and Jeanette Canham of Sevierville, Tennessee, and Susan Canham of Shawnee; her brother, Broadus and Lib Willoughby of Asheville, North Carolina, and sister, Janie Smith of Richmond, Virginia. She is also survived by five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and 18 nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Broadus and Olga Willoughby; brother, Sidney Willoughby, and sister Olga Spanko.

Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 11, at Resthaven Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m.

A celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, at First Baptist Church of Shawnee at 2 p.m., followed by burial at Resthaven Memorial Park.
