When Shawnee City Commissioners met Monday they showed the city's appreciation toward the service of two longtime city employees, extending thanks to Clarice Brock and Jim VanAntwerp, who both retired this year.

Resolutions of appreciation were presented to Brock for more than 35 years of service and to VanAntwerp for more than 26 years of service.

Brock began her employment for the city in Oct. 1981 in the City Clerk's office. In 2005, she transferred to the fire department. Brock retired in July.

VanAntwerp started work with the city in Sept. 1991 as a firefighter. During his career, he achieved the rank of Fire Equipment Operator in 1993, Captain in 1996, and Battalion Chief in 2001. Jim elected to retire in January.

Shawnee Fire Chief Dru Tischer said he was grateful to the city for recognizing the pair of fire department employees for their many years of service.

“They left big shoes to fill,” he said. “We really miss them.”
