Shawnee Public Schools is planning for the future and needs the community’s help. The district has launched a continuous strategic improvement initiative with an online community survey that runs through Oct. 13, and local residents are being asked to participate.

“During the 2017-2018 school year, as we continue to strive for excellence in Shawnee Public Schools, we are excited to begin the Continuous Strategic Improvement (CSI) process that will lay out a five-year vision for our district,” Superintendent April Grace said. “Together with teachers, parents, students, staff, and our community we will build upon the foundation of excellence that is established in Shawnee and work to ensure success for ALL students. We are confident that the CSI process will help our students achieve at higher levels, create an even more supportive environment for our employees and ensure Shawnee is a destination city for families.”

The school district is working with the Oklahoma State School Boards Association and K20 Center for Education Community Renewal at the University of Oklahoma to facilitate the planning process.

School board president Keith Sandlin said community involvement in the process is critical, and they can provide input through a survey and attending community forums.

“We are looking forward to involving the Shawnee community in the Continuous Strategic Improvement process so that we might find more effective ways to serve our students and meet our community’s needs,” said school board president Keith Sandlin. “As we move forward as a school district, we anticipate updating technology, prioritizing facility improvements, and aligning curriculum/resources to better prepare the students of Shawnee for their future endeavors beyond Shawnee Schools.”

The survey will remain open for input until Oct. 13. It is available on the Shawnee Public Schools website at www.shawnee.k12.ok.us.

Planning teams involving community, business and school district representatives will use student achievement data, results from the survey and forums and research to develop a continuous improvement strategic plan.

Community forums are scheduled for:

• Oct. 9 - 6 p.m., Immanuel Baptist Church, 1451 E. 45th Street

• Oct. 10 — 6 p.m., Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center, 1702 S Gordon Cooper

A proposed plan is expected to be presented for school board for approval in mid-2018.
