The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office is searching for the suspect or suspects who allegedly threw a large rock off the U.S. 177 bridge and hit a deputy's moving patrol car on SH 9.

Undersheriff Travis Palmer said the incident occurred about 1 a.m. Saturday in Tecumseh.

The deputy was driving eastbound out of Tecumseh on SH 9 and the rock came from the U.S. 177 bridge above, he said, and busted a hole through the windshield.

“It was very dangerous,” Palmer said, adding people have been killed in such circumstances.

Luckily, he said, the deputy was able to keep control of the patrol unit and avoided being in an accident.

Other deputies responded to search the area, but no one was found.

Deputies aren't sure if the patrol unit was targeted, or if the deputy just happened to be the first car going through that area when the suspects were on that bridge.
