In September, around the time of the Pottawatomie County Fair, the Shawnee Police Foundation (SPF) hosted a championship-level barbecue cook-off and its annual golf tournament.

The fundraising efforts were to benefit Shawnee's police and fire departments.

From among the proceeds, the SPF was able to gift $2,500 to the Shawnee Fire Department.

Over the years the events have been held at different times of year and the dates have changed — there was no set pattern established, but Shawnee Police Department (SPD) Officer Vivian Lozano-Stafford said this year's timing around the County Fair worked out well.

“From now on we plan to schedule the Guns and Hoses fundraiser during the same time — Sept. 11 — each year,” she said.

Lozano-Stafford said the events would not have seen near the success it did without support from all its sponsors and the community.

SPF Hot Pursuit BBQ Cook-off

Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), the state championship barbecue event included a $10,000 cash payout, as well as several other levels of cash prizes.

Shawnee Police Foundation (SPF) member Brittyn Rosebure said contestants came from as far away as Louisiana and Texas.

She said there were eight judges ranking the teams for the KCBS competition.

“The teams had around a four-hour time limit to make their specialties in four categories: chicken, pork, brisket and ribs,” Rosebure said. “Their meats were checked the night before to ensure no one cheated by starting early.”

Guns and Hoses Tournament

SPF hosted its Guns and Hoses Golf Tournament Monday, Sept. 11, at the Shawnee Country Club, at 2501 Augusta Drive.

Lozano-Stafford said many of Shawnee's police officers and firefighters participated.

Rosebure said there were 10 teams, having four members each, who entered in the golf tournament.

About SPF

The Shawnee Police Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides equipment and training for members of Shawnee law enforcement.

According to the City of Shawnee website, at shawneeok.org, four goals of the SPF are to:

• Support advanced law enforcement training opportunities

• Support community crime prevention activities and education

• Assist with special equipment needs that are outside of the normal departmental budget

• Assist in research, development, and implementation of programs to address challenges of providing police services of the highest quality

The SPF, with the assistance of the SPD, has identified some areas of need: tasers, radars, special programs/equipment for school safety, drug/narcotics enforcement and SWAT team equipment, the website reads.
